Student Consultant Competition at GEO/SEI Congress 2016

The Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Congress 2016 is soliciting interest from universities to compete for a $10,000 scholarship to be awarded at the Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Congress 2016 on Monday, February 15, 2016.

Teams of students and consultants will compete for a design commissioning for a new highway bridge project in small town America. The competition will be conducted by a presentation in front of a panel of judges, a format similar to real world competition between consultants. This will occur during a plenary session at the Congress.   From the Call for Proposals:

Universities will lead the team of consultants in the preparation and presentation of materials for the session. The university will be required to:
1. Assemble the consultant team. It is envisioned that each university has contact with local geotechnical and structural engineering firms who can partner for this effort.
2. Complete entry forms as may be required by the Congress.
3. Lead meetings of the consultants for discussion of concepts, planning and preparation of RFP submission materials. Prepare meeting minutes.
4. Organize and lead presentation practice session(s).
5. Attend the Congress and assure the presence of the presentation team

Universities interested in being considered must file a letter of interest with the GEO/SEI 2016 Congress by May 8, 2015.  Click here to download the Request for Proposal for more information.

Call For Short Course Proposals – Geotechnical & Structural Engineering Congress 2016

The G-I has issued a Call For Short Course Proposals for the Geotechnical & Structural Engineering Congress to be held February 14-17, 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona.  Proposals are due February 11, 2015.  Short courses should be on topics of interest to the disciplines of geotechnical and structural engineering.

The Geo-Institute (G-I) and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers have come together to create this first-of-its kind
conference. By combining the best of both Institutes’ annual congresses into one unique event, attendees will benefit from unmatched learning and networking
opportunities with colleagues within and across disciplines. The technical program will include diverse interdisciplinary topics such as professional practice, soil structure interaction, geotechnical and structural elements of foundation and retaining wall design, soil behavior and performance — as well as traditional geotechnical and structural topics.

Download the Call for Proposals here.

Seminars by PDCA and DFI

PDCA is hosting a “Pile Load Testing Options Course” in Sacramento, California on August 21, 2014.

The course will begin with a presentation by Van E. Komurka, P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE  of Wagner Komurka Geotechnical Group, Inc. titled: Driven Pile Test Programs – Paying Off with More Than Just Information. Van’s presentation will discuss the benefits of a well-designed pile load test program, its cost-effectiveness and applications.  The course will also feature presentations on the various types of pile load testing methods, including Static, High Strain Dynamic and Rapid Load testing. These presentations will be followed by a Q & A to allow attendees to address all of the presenters at once.

Learning Objectives
· Familiarity with the various types of pile load testing options and the functionality of each
· Ability to select the most appropriate pile load test for your design/project
· How a well designed load test program can achieve cost saving measures, while providing greater overall efficiency and effectiveness in the final pile design
